The death of Mickey Mantle closes a circle ("The Mick: Hero for all seasons," News, Monday). When I was a teen-ager, I was a St. Louis Cardinals fan but also a New York Yankees fan. In 1961, I would check the box score daily to see if the M&M boys - Maris and Mantle - were progressing in their assault on Babe Ruth's home-run record.
Mantle eventually fell short, though he hit a monumental 54 "round-trippers." Roger Maris broke the record with his 61 in '61.
If the management of the New York Yankees wants to do something constructive in memory of Mantle, I urge the Yankees to announce a Mickey Mantle Day during which no alcoholic beverages would be sold in Yankee Stadium.
