Doctor Ralph Henderson, assistant director-general of the World Health Organization in Geneva, is involved in international efforts to diagnose and contain the spread of the deadly Ebola (Pronounced: EE-bola) virus outbreak in Kikwit, Zaire. According to Henderson, here's what's known about the mysterious virus:
A. It is one of a group of viruses that cause hemorrhagic fever, characterized by massive internal bleeding. After an incubation period ranging from two to 21 days, symptoms start with a sudden fever and headache. The disease leads to bloody vomiting and diarrhea, bleeding from the nose and gums, pain and mental stupor or disorientation. Death may occur within 10 days.
