Beta carotene supplements don't lower the risk of heart disease or cancer, and might even harm smokers and others at high risk for lung cancer, new studies indicate.
Interim results showed 28% more lung cancers and 17% more deaths among those taking high doses of beta carotene and vitamin A, said researcher John Balmes of the University of California, San Francisco.
