"People are really responding to our message and eager for a change," Clatworthy campaign spokeswoman Molly Shepherd said. She said Clatworthy, a Dover businessman who owns restaurants and radio stations, also has lent the campaign $50,000. That figure is not included in the $670,000.
During the first quarter, Clatworthy raised 75 cents for every dollar Biden raised. Campaign money can indicate the depth of support for a candidate and can demonstrate momentum, which in turn can bring in more money.
Clatworthy ran against Biden in 1996, losing 60 percent to 38 percent. In that race, as well, he raised more than $1 million and spent a respectable amount of money.
