Abstract (Document Summary)

The continuity begins with [Ron Wellman], who has been in charge for 14 years. Jennifer Averill has led the field hockey program for 15 years; men's soccer coach Jay Vidovich is in his 13th season; and women's soccer coach Tony da Luz is in his 10th. Football coach Jim Grobe is working under a 10-year contract.

In the fall the Deacons are generally at the top of their games. Field hockey has made seven consecutive NCAA appearances and has lost just nine matches in five years. Men's soccer has reached the postseason six of the last seven years; women's soccer has a string of 10 NCAA bids.

The Wake Forest campus is a 340-acre oasis of colonial brick buildings and state-of-the-art playing fields surrounded by trees and green space. The university annually ranks among the nation's premier liberal-arts schools (30th in the 2006 U.S. News & World Report standings). In 2005-06 Wake Forest spent $33.7million on athletics and had $34.5million in revenue.
