Scientists praised the study but said more research needs to be done to be sure the link is real. Previous research on particles has been controversial but influential. A 1993 study and another published in 1995 that tied particle pollution to death from cardiovascular disease drew fierce attacks from industry-funded scientists. Despite the criticism, the studies were a driving force in the EPA's decision in 1997 to adopt stricter standards for particles in the nation's air.
